The Chilean street artist INTI returns to his home country to paint a mural as “a return to a starting point of a cycle” in the border city of Arica in Chile. This mural was organized by Arica Activa Foundation.
About The Mural
Entitled “Pachakuti” which means “He who remakes the world” in the Quechua language. Quechua is an Amerind language with about 8 million people in Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and Argentina. Quechua was the language of the Inca empire which was destroyed by the Spanish in the 16th century.
“As a frontier city, which for many, is the end of a narrow and homogeneous country. However, for others means a continuation or entrance to that South America rich in miscegenation and traditions. The cross-wise South America that knows no political borders and that allows itself to be swayed by the color of the bronzes that descends from the Andes all the way down to coast. Cultural and religious syncretism, here and now! In a country that has forgotten that the sacred and the festive go hand by hand in the CARNIVAL!!” – INTI.
About The Artist
Inti Castro is a graffiti artist and muralist born in Valparaíso, Chile. He began painting walls at 13 and has not stopped since. He is known for his characters inspired by the Latin American syncretism of the mixture of the Spanish and indigenous heritage. These characters look very often like puppets, dolls, and usually represent the human figure as well as animals. He is one of the most recognized street artists globally, his large scale murals can be found in several cities in Chile and worldwide and has participated in international festivals dedicated to the culture of street and graffiti in Norway, France, Poland, Hawaii and Lebanon amongst others. INTI was also one of the organizers of the Graffiti festival in Valparaiso that pays tribute to this city characterized as a cultural melting pot. He is also part of a crew named ’Stgo Under’ who he still occasionally paints with.
