Moroccan native Mohamed L’Ghacham is a painter and muralist who’s lived in Barcelona his entire life. These days, he’s spending time in Los Angeles, where he recently painted his newest mural for the PDP Gallery.
The mural, entitled Reunión de Vecinos IV is poignant, intimate, reflective. It blends in beautifully with its space. L’Ghacham has always enjoyed painting with dark, dull colors but with this new mural, he chose to experiment with more vivid colors. As with most of his work, L’Ghacham beautifully portrays a random moment in such a way that it can be viewed as a memento. His murals, often based on photographs, contribute greatly to the authenticity of his work – viewers become voyeurs, sneaking a peak into someone else’s life. They are temporarily transported to a different time and place.
L’Ghacham combines his love of classical painting and his interest in street art to form his own unique genre, where figurative and impressionist styles meet urban art techniques. Memories play an important role in his work – L’Ghacham believes in the notion of capturing scenes that both he and his audience can relate to. He creates scenes from everyday life and combines these with the visual imagery of photography. His current work is a mixture of classical techniques and contemporary muralism. L’Ghacham is influenced by Spanish painters Pere Llobera and Antonio López, and muralists Axel Void and Sebas Velasco, to name a few.
The new mural was painted by the entrance of the PDP Gallery’s newest location in Los Angeles. The gallery will officially be opening its doors next October and L’Ghacham will present his first solo show Esto es Para Siempre in February 2019.
