The portuguesse artists Mr. Dheo and Pariz One recently collaborated in Porto, Portugal to create two massive murals split between the two building facades of the student residence, Livensa Living Porto Campus of Temprano Capital Partners. The mural, done with a spray technique, aims to trigger awareness towards two social problems: racism and xenophobia.
For the project Mr. Dheo and Pariz One painted the façade of the building with a realism style mural. Transmitting the need for respecting others and promoting equality from a social perspective, they have illustrated symbolic elements such as a world map and two hands forming a heart to unify races, ages and cultures.
Co-curated by Sónia da Rocha, the director of the Public Art Programme and manager of Sonae Sierra’s Shopping Centres, and José Quintela da Fonseca, the architect who designed the student residence, they stated “Including public art in student residences allows buildings to establish a direct communication with the public. This makes a difference to its anonymous surroundings giving it the opportunity to be remembered.”
Da Rocha also pointed out the peculiarity of the project. The area of Asprela in Oporto is a very different district in comparison to the city. Asprela is far away from tourists and mainly inhabited by local families and thousands of students from all over the world: “it is a great opportunity for its inhabitants to have a public artwork of this beauty and category”
With these two news murals the artists not only promote a better self-awareness of key values in our civilization, but they also show the ability of urban art to act as a social catalyst in the public space.
MrDheo always related to Art. When he was three years old he began to copy sentences from newspapers and magazines and drawing on his own. Always rejecting any kind of connection to a school or Art course in his childhood, he developed his own techniques, which enabled him to evolve without direct influences.
As an autodidact, the first contact with graffiti appeared at the age of fifteen and soon his drawings turned into countless letter studies. Months later he did his first street painting and started to meet other artists to whom he related and that motivated him to carry on.
Today – after seventeen years of continuous work – Mr.Dheo already made interventions in over forty cities all over the world. He collaborates with well-known international brands and companies although he keeps the street as the perfect place to create. Versatile, he dedicates himself mostly to photorealistic productions which, together with graphic components, give him a very personal style in constant growth and development.
