Galician artist Yoseba MP spent two weeks creating a large mural “Un castell, moltes llengües” in the Plaza de Guernica in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat (Barcelona). The project is part of one of the actions undertaken by the City Council of L’Hospitalet to establish an artistic circuit in the city’s public space.
In 2012, Yoseba MP won the Novos Valores Prize from the Pontevedra County Council with the painting “Juancho y sus perros” for a project he developed in Galicia. The series, “Mis amigos y sus perros” is a tribute and testimony to the work that rural women are doing in Galicia, where the artist mixes countryside reality with science fiction, comics and cartoons.
Yoseba MP combines studio work and urban murals with his realist style through which he’s able to portray everyday scenes that reflect a very human part of society from a humorous perspective. For this latest intervention at the Plaza de Guernica, the artist shaped a tower of “castellers”, an emblematic element of Catalan culture, composed by different cartoon and comic characters.
The characters depict the cultural diversity of L’Hospitalet, focusing on the idea of community, social cohesion, collaboration and coexistence. Also featured are comic figures, including Power Ranger, Lara Croft and Son Goku.
This mural has become part of a rich and heterogeneous composition of street art interventions and was produced by cultural entity Rebobinart, who’s philosophy is to promote a vision of professional urban art: providing citizens with a culture of participation and critical thinking.
The Rebobinart Association came to fruition in 2012, “under a clear social philosophy that puts urban art at the service of the social and cultural dynamization of public space.” The organization tasks itself with the goal of removing stigma from this art form, often superficially viewed as vandalism, in order to capitalize on the potential positive impact it can have on society.
