The Stadt Wand Kunst (SWK) festival in Mannheim, Germany, is a world class event that brought international muralists to the streets of Mannheim. It’s no surprise, then, that Waone was invited to paint a wall this year.
Waone’s mural entitled Jump Through time, is a metaphor about time travel; it explores moments when your mind is racing so quickly that you can see a series of events taking place, while simultaneously slowing down the notion of time. Waone’s mural is 8 meters high and 12 meters long, and took eight days to complete. Waone is inspired by surrealist painters and Ukrainian folktales and fairy tales, and this comes through in his work, where he creates a world in which the spiritual and imaginative transform into everyday reality.
Waone is originally from the Ukraine. He started painting graffiti in 1999 but quickly moved on to ‘visual storytelling’ when he connected with Aleksei Bordusov (a.k.a. Aec). You may already be familiar with Waone’s work – he used to form one half of the artistic duo known as Interesni Kazki (Aec being the other half). In 2016, Waone decided to pursue a solo career, allowing him to further explore and develop his artistic sensibilities. His weapon of choice for his outdoor work is acrylic bucket paint.
