NEVERCREW just wrapped up a mural in Turin, Italy for the “Toward 2030” project, an urban art initiative to disseminate and promote the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Organized by Lavazza and the City of Turin, 17 artists were selected to create murals based on each goal, with the Swiss street-art duo taking on the twelfth, responsible consumption and production that’s depicted in their work “Fade.”
Murals that illustrate the importance of human responsibility to our planet is not new for Christian Rebecchi and Pablo Togni of NEVERCREW. The artists have continued to use inventive ways to shed light on issues from global warming to endangered species. “Fade,” is based on the indifference of the unnatural use and exploitation of resources in two overlapping logics: the informed, and the unaware.
From the title to the image of a paper plane that’s starting to deteriorate the artists aim to enlighten the viewer what we put at risk for the future of our planet if we do not move towards more sustainable patterns of consumption and production on a global scale.
About NEVERCREW
NEVERCREW is a Swiss street-artist duo, Christian Rebecchi and Pablo Togni. Since 1996 they have been creating murals, sculptures and installations. As animal activists, their work observes endangered species illustrated by painting whales or polar bears trapped or destroyed by the human attitude.
This path led NEVERCREW to develop their current approach and to create artworks in cities all over the world.
The Towards 2030 Project is based in Turin and was initiated by Lavazza and the city of Turin. The project seeks to raise awareness of the United Nations’ sustainability goals (SDGs) through the presence of art. The SDGs are a UN agenda for sustainable development seeking to ‘end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity’ by 2030. The goals concern the world community as a whole: 193 countries agreed and subscribed this project as well as many private sector companies, individuals etc.
The seventeen goals laid out by the UN are incredibly ambitious, beginning with “Goal 1: End poverty in all its forms everywhere” and ending with “Goal 17: Revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.” The UN explains the latter by stating, “a successful sustainable development agenda requires partnerships between governments, the private sector and civil society.” A fractured image of such partnerships exists currently. Through campaign contributions and subtle opportunities for tax breaks, governments and the private sector have enjoyed great success in a shared alliance against civil society.
