In response to the freedom of expression movement in Barcelona, many artists expressed solidarity through a live painting session supporting Pablo Hasel and freedom of speech in Catalunya, Spain. The event was organized by artist Lucas Vico and features the work of many other big artists. The flyer advertised on Vico’s Instagram (@levico.arts) writes, “This Sunday we call for our freedom of expression painting in Cardedeu! Everyone is encouraged to come!” A video was produced in response to the action and captures the paintings being spray painted in real-time.
The joint effort features the work of artists such as Maga, Sigrid Amores, AEEC, Reos, Nova Vice, or None, among others. The pieces work in tandem with one another, transitioning effortlessly from one to another on the wall. First up, is the collective piece, “Free Pablo Hasel” written in bright red block letters, with a microphone on fire in the middle.
Reos’ piece, “DEMONCRACIA” is a play on the word democracy meant to emphasize and call to action how democracy in Spain doesn’t exist if it’s run under the guise of dictatorship. Limiting free expression the way the government did with Pablo Hasel is not a true democracy, because it is a fundamental right.
Artist Sigrid Amores had a similar message in her piece, highlighting “RESISTANCIA” followed by “Combatem El Feixisme”. MAGA illustrated a woman using the power of free speech to break the shackles around her, demonstrating the power of free speech. Showcased right next to this are the words, “Freedom Of Speech” accompanied by a portrait of Malcolm X. These pieces are few of many shown in the video, but all of them collectively demonstrate the power of expression through art, which can not be subdued. The fight for free expression and true democracy will continue to persist across Spain as long as unfair censorship practices are in place.
