Larger cities in Denmark are well-known for having a presence of street and public art.  WE AArt however, that takes place in Aalborg, is the first festival in Denmark to be focused entirely on murals. For their 2018 edition, the Swiss street-artist duo, NEVERCREW, who also participated in the project in 2016, returned to paint three walls along a crosswalk titled “Nuances Selection.”

About the Mural

Nuances Selection” is a symbolic narrative based on evolution and depicted in colour charts that are each distinctly varied. All three walls portray a whale, NEVERCREWS’s signature image, as they’re both animal activists. They’ve cleverly used this to create a fragmented timeline developed by the result of choices and an understanding of reality; the active participation in it and the consequent awareness.

For the first mural, the whale is set to a backdrop in different shades of blue, that are labelled as though it were a colour booklet. Continuing to successfully push the boundaries with creativity to spark awareness, the second and third murals put the whale amongst different hues of light and dark, that include greens, reds, and yellows. As NEVERCREW previously participated in this project in 2016, it’s clear as to why they were invited back, to design a thought-provoking series of work for the city to enjoy.

About NEVERCREW

NEVERCREW is a Swiss street-artist duo, Christian Rebecchi and Pablo Togni. Since 1996 they have been creating murals, sculptures and installations. As animal activists, their work observes endangered species illustrated by painting whales or polar bears trapped/destroyed by the human attitude.

This path led NEVERCREW to develop their current approach and to create artworks in cities all over the world.

About WEAART

WEAArt is an annual project in Aalborg, Denmark intended to create and add new ways of expression, as an inspiration and innovation for rethinking the view of public spaces in the city. A space created to surprise, marvel and excite – and susceptible to alternative artistic arenas.

Although Street art and public art already exists in Denmark and can be seen in particularly larger cities. WEAArt is, however, the first festival in Denmark to focus entirely on murals.

Founders Lars Bond and Mads Mulvad believe that Aalborg is one of the larger Danish cities to have an interesting and inspirational urban space. The reality of today is that very little contemporary art enriches Aalborg,  or the people living in it and they hope to continue evolving it.
